"Serving Alameda County Medical Center" July/August 2008

Dear Valued Donor,

As the first half of the summer is behind us, I find myself reflecting on the past year, our challenges and triumphs. The Foundation has made amazing strides in recent months, which I would like to share with you. As the Medical Center works to save countless lives everyday, we are working to enhance their capacity.

Our Angiography Suite Campaign is steaming right along with a $1 million challenge grant from a well-known East Bay foundation. We are working diligently to raise the remaining funds to complete the challenge. We anticipate having all the funds secured by December 2008. Many thanks to all the ACMC and community folks who help make this possible.

We had another successful fundraising gala in June. It was a pleasure to see so many of our friends and supporters out in support of our mission. Looking forward, we have our 13th Annual Golf Tournament in September. We hope for another sell-out crowd.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new member, Darlene Ayers-Johnson, whose roots and commitment to Oakland and Alameda County residents is remarkable. We are very pleased to have her on board as we move forward.

Sincerely

Cherlyn L. Spencer, MSW
Executive Director

ACMC PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO RECEIVE VITAL SUPPORT FROM FOUNDATION

The new fiscal year brings with it new changes and challenges for the Foundation. Alongside the Medical Center, we have streamlined our program for seeking funds for ACMC services. We have identified some new initiatives to support as well as continuing to seek support for other programs and services.

Program Priorities for 2008-2009 include:

ANGIOGRAPHY SUITE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN HITS THE 65% BENCHMARK!

Hats off to the angiography suite capital campaign team! To date the Foundation is proud to announce that $1.8 million has been raised towards its $2,664,000 campaign goal! We have engaged different sectors of the community, including foundations, corporations, community groups, and individuals.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, the Foundation hosted a breakfast on the Highland Campus to introduce the campaign to Alameda County faith-based leaders. Over 40 faith leaders participated and raised close to $20,000 guided by the prominent leadership of Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith of Allen Temple Baptist Church, Father Jay Matthews of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and Rev. Father Thomas Paris of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension.

The angiography suite is an imaging method that is used to diagnose and treat forms of heart disease and trauma to the cardiovascular system. Upon completion of the campaign, construction will begin for the suite (in the Fall of 2008) on the 5th floor of the Koret Foundation Critical Care and Clinical Center. It is anticipated that the suite will be fully operational by the Spring of 2009.

The angiography suite services will become part of a system of quality medical care delivery that includes rapid diagnosis and treatment for patients with cardiac and vascular diseases related to heart attacks, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, stroke, carotid artery narrowing, and aneurysm.

Thank you to all our generous supporters who helped us reach this milestone. For information on how to give towards this campaign, call 510.437.8365 or visit http://achcf.org/donate/index.html.

ACMC RECEIVES A HEALTHY CONTRIBUTION FROM CLAREMONT RESORT AND SPA’S FITNESS CLUB

The Claremont Resort has made a generous donation to the Alameda County Medical Center. The donation of 32 pieces of exercise equipment includes treadmills and Stairmaster machines, 20 pieces of Cybex-branded exercise units, plus a bench and seven free weight stations.

The equipment will be used in various clinics and specialty centers around all of the ACMC campuses, including Fairmont Hospital-San Leandro, Highland Hospital-Oakland, and possibly our ambulatory clinics in Newark, Hayward, and East Oakland.

We are grateful for a donation such as this. Many thanks to the folks at Claremont Resort!!

SPECIAL EVENTS 2008: ANNUAL GALA

The 18th Annual Gala benefit, “A Legacy of Caring,” held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Rotunda Building in downtown Oakland hosted by media personality Dr. Renel Brooks Moon attracted over 300 ACMC executives, medical staff, and corporate and community leaders. Upon arrival to the opening reception, guests were greeted by Oakland’s Prescott Clowns. Overall, the evening raised close to $200,000 from corporate sponsors, the live and silent auctions, and ticket sales. All proceeds go to support the work of the Foundation and Alameda County Medical Center’s programs and services.

Event highlights also included live entertainment by Hitsville USA Motown Legends. The Medical Center honored three people with awards: Dr Robert Savio, Physician of the year; June Lee, Care Giver of the Year, and Mr. Bruce Bauer as Philanthropist of the Year. Catering was provided by Patrick David Foods of Danville, CA.

Thank you to all donors, supporters, and volunteers who helped make this evening a grand affair!!
